Canonical Name (CNAME)

Canonical Name (CNAME) is a zone file resource record used as an alias to hide the true name of a server from the public. www is often used as the CNAME for a domains web server, hence the prevalence of this prefix in Fully Qualified Domain Names (FQDN).
